South County high school athletic teams began observing “dead week” this past Sunday and athletes will have no contact with their coaches until July 30. Football, cross country and volleyball teams will resume regular practice after that date.

Greenfield High volleyball team played two games last week in the Pacific Coast Athletic League. The Lady Bruins lost to the York School Falcons and to Oakwood.

Lady Bruins beat KC in slugfest

The Greenfield Lady Bruin softball team outslugged the visiting King City Lady Mustangs 13-12 on March 28 in a Coastal League contest in Greenfield.

Bruins squash Toads, 4-3

The Greenfield Bruin baseball team won the second game in a doubleheader on Thursday against the visiting Coalinga Horned Toads.

Cross Country | Mustang boys win invitational

With five runners in the top six places the King City varsity boys cross country team easily won their division at Saturday’s Jackie Henderson Memorial Invitational hosted by North Monterey High School in Castroville. King City scored 17 points to easily defeat second place San Benito with 66 points. Soledad High placed fifth in the division.

Half Marathon resumes Saturday

Hundreds of runners and walkers will take to South County backroads on Saturday to take part in the eighth annual Salinas Valley Half Marathon the will start at the Soledad Mission and finish at Pessagno Winery on 1645 River Road.

King City takes gold

Four wins on Saturday earned the King City Lady Mustang volleyball team the championship of the Gold Division at Saturday’s Everett Alvarez Volleyball Tournament in Salinas.

Lady Bruins score 37 runs in double wins

The Greenfield Lady Bruins softball team exploded for 37 runs and a combined 36 hits in wins last week against the Trinity Christian Warriors and the Anzar Hawks.

Local baseball All-Star teams fall in semi-finals

All five local Little League All-Stars teams were beaten in the semi-finals of the California District 9 section.
