The South Valley Stealth softball team placed third in the 16 and under B Division at the Northern California Qualifying Tournament this past weekend at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex in Sunnyvale.

The King City, Soledad and Gonzales High School volleyball teams began non-league games this week to kick off the season.

An offensive show was displayed right out of the gate by the host Gonzales Spartans as they scored at will in a 62-7 Santa Lucia Divisional game with Greenfield High Bruins on Friday at Dick Force Stadium.

Blackbelt students from Carrillo’s Karate Studio in Greenfield are training for an international tournament that will take place Oct. 26-30 in England.

The Greenfield Lady Bruin softball team is in first place in the Coastal League with less than two weeks left in the regular season.

Gonzales High School placed seven football players on the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s Santa Lucia Division All-League first-team, while Greenfield High Bruins had three players chosen first-team offense and one player voted first-team for defense.

For the third straight year the Greenfield boys are cross country champions of the Mission Trail Athletic League. The Bruins had five runners earn All-MTAL medals after out running the rest of the field. Greenfield finished first, followed by Pacific Grove and King City.

Two epic games that were decided by single runs marked the end of the league season for the Soledad Aztecs and King City Mustangs.

Three losses at the North Salinas Bob Steinbach Classic did not dampen the optimism of Greenfield’s first-year head coach Adam Barsenas. The Bruins fell to 1-7 with one non-league game remaining to play.

The beginning of March means baseball and softball teams at local high schools are finishing up non-league games and getting ready to start the league seasons.
