GREENFIELD — Greenfield Community Science Workshop has been awarded $25,000 through Chevron’s Eagles for Education initiative to benefit local science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education programs at last month’s PURE Insurance Championship golf tournament in Pebble Beach.
Chevron donated $6,000 per every eagle made during the Sept. 19-24 tournament, with proceeds reaching $220,000 that will support more than 22,000 students in STEM programs, including The First Tee of Monterey County, CHISPA, El Camino Real Fútbol League and Greenfield Community Science Workshop.
The Science Workshop partnered with the local After School Safety and Education Program to take Greenfield students to the tournament that weekend, where they participated in Chevron’s STEM Zone, an interactive exhibit that illustrates STEM concepts through real-world applications like golf. Over the course of the week, the STEM Zone hosted more than 1,700 students from around Monterey County.
“It’s inspiring to see youth from our community and participants from The First Tee engaging in STEM Zone activities,” said Steve John, tournament director and Monterey Peninsula Foundation CEO. “They have so much fun digging into and playing around with the science behind their favorite sports.”
Chevron’s Eagles for Education initiative and partnership with the PURE Insurance Championship is committed to increasing STEM education quality and access. The company provides resources, such as the STEM Zone, to encourage students to pursue STEM careers.
Since 2011, the program has raised more than $7.2 million for local non-profits.
The breakdown of Chevron’s donation from this year’s tournament is as follows: $100,000 for The First Tee of Monterey County, $75,000 for CHISPA, $20,000 for El Camino Real Fútbol League and $25,000 for Greenfield Community Science Workshop.
“Funding obtained from the Eagles for Education program will be used to support our newest program, the South Monterey County Mobile Science Workshop Program,” said Jose Sanchez, program coordinator for the Workshop.
The Science Workshop, a community-based organization that offers hands-on science, engineering and technology activities for students, recently expanded to take its programming on the road. The South Monterey County Mobile Science Workshop Program reaches the communities of King City, San Ardo and San Lucas every week via a mobile unit in which youth can explore the world of science.
Funding from the Eagles for Education initiative will go toward supporting the mobile program, which is free for participants.
