Soledad places 2nd in league

SOLEDAD — A switch to the Cypress Division of the Pacific Coast Athletic League has been positive so far for the Soledad Lady Aztecs volleyball team. With a 7-1 divisional record and 10-7 overall mark, Soledad is staying in league in non-league play.

Last week the Aztecs beat North Monterey County Condors 25-10, 25-14 and 25-14 at home, then traveled to Gonzales and defeated the host Spartans, 25-11, 25-19 and 25-14.

“Krystal Villegas is constantly moving out on the court and not letting any balls drop,” said Soledad head coach Alicia Dominguez. “Jamileth Magdaleno and Olivia Fale had many kills against Gonzales and Jasmine Aguilera had many digs as a middle blocker.”

Yesterday Soledad traveled to Gilroy to play the Gilroy Mustangs, who are the leading the Lady Aztecs in divisional play. Tomorrow Soledad will host the Anzar Hawks.

Spartans lose to Aztecs

GONZALES — A young Gonzales High varsity volleyball team lost in three games to the visiting Soledad Aztecs last Thursday night in the Roger Fernando Gym.

Soledad defeated the Spartans 25-11, 25-19 and 25-15.  The loss dropped Gonzales to 1-5 in league and 1-15 overall.

“We’ve seen good progress in our six underclassmen,” said Gonzales head coach Desiree Baltazar. “We currently have three freshmen and three sophomores on our roster. It’s been tough for us during this rebuild, but it takes struggles to bring out the fighting spirit in athletes. As long as we stay together and keep pushing to improve we will get thought it.”

Gonzales hosted the Pajaro Valley Grizzlies yesterday and will travel to Castroville tomorrow to battle the North Monterey County Condors.
