Monterey County schools likely to stay closed through end of school year

Distance learning planned for students amid COVID-19 crisis

MONTEREY COUNTY — Monterey County schools are likely to remain closed through the end of the 2019-20 school year due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

According to online reports Tuesday, Monterey County Superintendent of Schools Deneen Guss announced in a letter to parents that the county’s school facilities will be closed but education will continue through distance learning.

“Distance learning is taking place in different ways throughout our county and we encourage you to contact your students’ teachers and administrators for confirmation of specific plans,” Guss reportedly said in the letter.

The announcement comes after California’s State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond recommended earlier in the day that the state’s public schools should plan to provide distance learning to students through the rest of the school year.
