Library event features Disney author

GREENFIELD — “Coco in the Vines,” the third annual South County event for the Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries, is set to take place Saturday, July 7, at Scheid Vineyards and will feature the award-winning author Roni Capin Rivera-Ashford.

Ashford was invited by Disney to write children’s books based on its animated movie “Coco,” which follows the story of 12-year-old Miguel Rivera, a Mexican boy who dreams of becoming an accomplished musician as well as his adventures into the Land of the Dead.

Rivera embarks on a journey to discover the history of his family and why he is forbidden to listen to or perform music.

“I’m really excited that we’re able to bring such a well-known author to South County,” said Library Director Jayanti Addleman. “Roni is well-known for dealing with the topic of culture, family and history in a very sensitive way, which is why Disney chose her to work on the books for them.”

Addleman is hoping for a big turnout for the event that will include a program by Ashford.

Many of Ashford’s stories celebrate family, history, culture and tradition, which led Disney to invite her to write the “Coco” books. Among Ashford’s works are “My Tata’s Remedies,” “My Nana’s Remedies” and “Hip Hip Hooray, It’s Monsoon Day.”

“Coco in the Vines,” sponsored by Scheid Vineyards, begins at 5 p.m. at the Scheid Tasting Room in Greenfield, 1972 Hobson Ave., and includes a silent auction, taco bar, Mexican desserts and a selection of Scheid’s wines.

Tickets are $60 per person, with all proceeds benefiting the Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries. Call 831-424-3564 or go to www.fmcfl.org for tickets.
