Lady Aztecs win 2 of 3 league games

SOLEDAD — The Soledad Lady Aztec softball team won two of three league games to improve to 6-4 in the Mission Trail Athletic League. Soledad is 15-8 overall and is fourth place in the MTAL. The Lady Aztecs won games against Gonzales and King City and lost to the Carmel Padres.

At Gonzales Lady Aztec pitcher Elena Meza had a no-hitter going until the sixth inning but hung on to beat the Spartans, 7-0. Meza received pitching support in relief from Alize Duarte. Meza added two hits of her own.

Adriana Valdez led Soledad with three hits, including a double and had two runs batted in and Evelina Ramirez had two hits. Celeste Canchola had one hit and three RBI’s, Monique Rodriguez had one hit and an RBI, and Skylan Fregoso had one hit and an RBI.

At last Thursday’s game with King City the game was tied at 3-3 until the bottom of the fourth when the Lady Aztecs scored four runs to take the lead at 7-3. Soledad padded the lead with five runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth. Valdez, Fregoso, and Celeste Parra had two hits apiece. Rodriguez, Canchola, Meza, and Ramirez had basehits. Jennika Alcantar had one hit and three RBI’s. Alize Duarte was the winning pitcher.

“KC got on the board right away, picking up two runs to start the game,” said Soledad head coach Joel Ramirez. “We picked up runs to tie the game and after that every player in the lineup got a hit.”

The following day at Carmel, the Padres had seven hits in an 11-1 win over the visiting Lady Aztecs. Carmel limited Soledad to just three hits and one run.

“Carmel put up runs in every inning,” said Coach Ramirez. “We couldn’t be consistent getting at bats together. Right now we control our own destiny and we have a good opportunity to make our first post season appearance but we have to play well the next two weeks.”

Soledad hosted the Pacific Grove Breakers yesterday and play in Monterey against Santa Catalina tomorrow afternoon.
