June Primary filing period opens Feb. 12

SOUTH COUNTY — The June Primary Election is less than five months away and filing dates are rapidly approaching.

The candidate filing period begins Feb. 12 and continues through March 9, with an extended filing period if the eligible incumbent does not file. Election Day is June 5.

Soledad Unified School District is placing one item on the ballot. The district is looking to extend a bond for Soledad High School that would sunset during the 2021-2022 school year.

“We’re going to ask the community for an extension of that bond measure,” said Soledad Superintendent Tim Vanoli.

The bond would extend through 2047-2048 and 55 percent of the Soledad registered voters would have to approve the measure for it to be approved.

The South Monterey County Joint Union High School, King City Union School District, Greenfield Union School District and Gonzales Unified School District will not be placing any bond measures on the June ballot.

Locally, Judges of the Superior Court seats Susan Matcham, Elizabeth Mineta, Julie Culver, and Larry Hayes are up for election.

Monterey County Superintendent of Schools is also on the ballot, and Deneen Newman-Guss has announced she will be running.

Monterey County Board of Supervisor Simon Salinas’ seat is up, and Chris Lopez and Alejandro Chavez have both announced their intent to run. Also at the County Office the Assessor-County Clerk Recorder, Auditor/Controller and District Attorney seats are also part of the June ballot. Sheriff Steve Bernal and Treasurer/ tax collector Mary Zeeb’s terms are also up.

The June Primary will include voting for State Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s spot, which ends in June, and Anna Caballero has already announced her candidacy.

Congressman Jimmy Panetta is also up as U.S. California Representative in June along with Gov. Jerry Brown. The governor race has six candidates, four Democrats and two Republicans: Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, former mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa, State Treasurer John Chiang, former California Superintendent of Public Instruction Delanie Estin, businessman John Cox and Assemblyman Travis Allen.

Other seats up for election are: Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, Controller, State Treasurer, Attorney General, Insurance Commissioner, State of California Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Equalization. State Sen. Anthony Cannella’s seat is also up for election, as well as Member of the State Assembly Mark Stone’s spot and Member of the State Assembly Anna Caballero’s seat.
