Greenfield Pharmacy to close this week

GREENFIELD — Longtime local business Greenfield Pharmacy will close this week after 57 years in operation.

The pharmacy’s last day will be this Friday, with the business and inventory having been sold to Rite Aid.

“I will miss my patients and seeing them and taking care of them after all these years,” said owner John McElmoyl. He explained his reason for selling the business was due to health issues, specifically knee replacements and not being able to stand for the long hours needed to run the pharmacy.

The property itself will remain as McElmoyl’s, but he said he currently has no plans for the building. He said the pharmacy will maintain business as usual up to its last day. And, as for the employees, he explained, “Everybody has found employment elsewhere and everybody seems to be satisfied with the circumstances.”

The interactions, however, are something he noted, “All of my family and pharmacy family will miss everyone we’ve had the opportunity to care for over the years. They will be missed.”

Greenfield Pharmacy has been in business since 1961, started by John McElmoyl’s mother and father, with John purchasing the business and running it for the past 26 years.

McElmoyl said supporting local business is important, and for the support of his pharmacy over the years, he said, “I’ve been very well supported and I appreciated every single day that I woke up.”

McElmoyl said past employees are coming back to visit, some from as far away as Arizona, for the final days of the pharmacy’s run.

“It’s been a family pharmacy and these people have a true sense of loyalty and family. You don’t see that very often,” he said.
