Fire season begins

SOUTH COUNTY — Fire season has begun for King City and Greenfield, with two fires reported in the area last week.

The first fire involved a vehicle and broke out around 4 p.m. on May 5 in front of Mee Memorial Hospital. The fire started at the front of the van and was put out by Cal Fire King City and King City Fire Department. No one was injured during that fire.

The next evening at about 6:30 p.m., a wildfire broke out in Greenfield on Walnut Avenue. Cal Fire crews and Greenfield Fire Protection District worked to extinguish the fire on May 6. Conditions were windy and any injuries are not known at this time.

On May 8, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Chief of the San Benito-Monterey Unit Brennan Blue suspended burning permits and other uses of open fire. The burn permit and open fire restrictions include state area lands and other areas that are under contract within the counties of Monterey and San Benito.

Blue said campfires with organized campgrounds or on private property that are otherwise permitted will be allowed if the campfire is maintained in such a manner as to prevent its spread to wildland.

The order was issued at 8 a.m. and will remain in effect until Blue formally terminates the proclamation.
