Fifth-graders get taste of middle school life

GREENFIELD — Fifth graders from Cesar Chavez, Oak Avenue School and Mary Chapa Academy got a taste of what the next year is going to be like at Vista Verde Middle School on May 19.

Beginning early in the day Cesar Chavez students arrived at Vista Verde and took part in an orientation, tour and rally. Following Cesar Chavez next were the students from Oak Avenue and finishing out the day was the Mary Chapa students.

Students from each school are broken up into groups with a Vista Verde student leader leading them to their activities.

“It gives them the chance to be leaders and the students get to see them as student leaders,” Assistant Principal Jaime Calderon said.

The Vista Verde Middle School leaders were wearing the “Grizzly Way Attire,” which reinforces the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. The “Grizzly Way” is to teach students about being responsible, respectful, positive and safe.

“That’s always reinforced throughout the presentation with our gear and we also inform our incoming students that is what we recognize the student for,” said Assistant Principal Myra Villagomez. “We want them to model that and display that in the classrooms, during their recess, at home and on their way to school.”

Calderon and the student leaders took the incoming students through dress code and what they want students to say in different situations. The dress code is not referred to as a dress code but “dress for success.”

“We want them to go away with the image of what they can do to be successful,” Calderon said.

The fifth-grade orientation day was organized by the Vista Verde Counselors. The whole session is aiming at trying to engage the students, and the day ended with a game of leap frog.
