Day of the Child celebrates local youth

GREENFIELD — Children playing with bubbles and games as well as arts and crafts activities were all part of this year’s El Día de los Niños, or Day of the Child, event in Greenfield.

Greenfield Branch Library hosted the April 27 event that brought local youth out to celebrate and be recognized as an important part of the community. Children’s Day has been celebrated in Mexico since 1925 and remains a national observance for the country.

It’s the first time the Greenfield Library has hosted an event for the day. The library prepared a “Story Walk” for those present.

“The Story Walk promotes literacy and promotes family activities,” Branch Manager Dawn Vest said. “It also gets people out and active.”

The Story Walk was created by Vermont Ann Ferguson. Story walks include a story but are limited to about 30 pages of a children’s book.

“You just take each page and create a sign out of it,” Vest said. “It creates a walking path.”

Greenfield Community Science Workshop brought bubble devices to the event at Hicks Park, just outside the Greenfield Library. Children chased after bubbles and tried to catch really big ones by hand.

Young community members were also able to participate in a “Sensory City” station and feel different things.

Finger painting and an adult coloring section were also part of the event.

Inside the library were smaller maker’s space activities with magna tiles, KEVA planks to build things, and the selection of books, movies and audiobooks the library has available.

Along with the Science Workshop, Mayor Pro Tem Yanely Martinez and the Friends of the Library also supported and helped during the event.
