Community Science Workshop to add 2 new vehicles

GREENFIELD — A passenger van and pickup truck for the Greenfield Community Science Workshop was approved by the City Council on April 25.

The purchase of the two vehicles will benefit the operation and programs of the Greenfield Community Science Workshop.

“This a commitment that we hope to make in order to increase the capacity of the science workshop after thinking of better ways to invest this money,” Program Coordinator Jose Sanchez said. “The main goal with the new passenger van would be mainly to expand the outdoor program that we have.”

The Greenfield Community Science Workshop (GCSW) has one van that allows them to take approximately 20 kids on field trips and to events like the Robotics Competition. The GCSW would like to be able to take more students on these field trips.

The field trips are on the weekends and after school hours, according to Sanchez.

“We are in need for more vehicles as we expand our work with the schools, as we have more people moving in and out and doing work at the school sites,” Sanchez said.

The vehicles will also be used to carry supplies. The GCSW uses a lot of materials for the science projects that go on and the pickup truck would aid with that.

“Last week we were working with second graders from Oak Avenue School and they wanted to take a field trip to our garden,” Sanchez said. “They wanted to transplant some vegetables, plant some flowers and all this stuff has to make its way to Greenfield.”

The vehicles will be driven by Science Workshop employees who have driver’s licenses and a good driving record. The vehicles will be used and be part of the city inventory of vehicles.

“I think it’s wonderful that your science workshop program is so popular and that you have so many kids interested in going on the field trips that you need an addition van,” Council member Leah Santibanez said.

The resolution for the two new vehicles was approved unanimously by the Greenfield City Council.
