GREENFIELD — Mee Memorial Hospital celebrated the groundbreaking of its multi-million-dollar Greenfield Clinic expansion project last Wednesday, with construction now underway at the health center.

Interim CEO Mike Hutchinson and Greenfield Mayor Pro Tem Avelina Torres were among the guest speakers at the Aug. 29 ceremony held at the site of the expansion, directly next to the clinic.

“This is an exciting day, and it’s a tribute to the staff and physicians and the Greenfield community,” Hutchinson said.

“This will help us keep pace with the growth in South County and is just the first step of really expanding the footprint of Mee Memorial,” Hutchinson continued. “We’re also looking at educational programs for the community based on the medical needs that our physicians have identified, working with the community and the Cities of Greenfield, Soledad and King City along with the high schools, so that we become part of the fabric of the community.”

The estimated $4 million expansion and renovation project will add 5,965 square feet to the current facility’s 7,000-square-foot building at 467 El Camino Real. The expansion includes seven new primary care exam rooms and a treatment room as well as an interior renovation of the existing reception, waiting and public restroom areas.

A large room to support groups for such activities as diabetes screening, nutrition and health education and staff training will be added as well.

Greenfield Clinic is one of the busiest health centers in South County, providing care to more than 2,000 patients every month. The expansion will allow for an additional 800 to 1,200 patients to be seen monthly, helping to meet the community’s growing demand for medical care.

“I want to thank Mee Memorial for thinking about how important it is for the quality and care for all of our citizens, including the surrounding areas,” Torres said. “… It’s going to be a wonderful partnership between Mee Memorial and the City of Greenfield.”

Hibser Yamauchi Architects Inc. designed the new clinic, with Avila Construction beginning ground work on the expansion this week.

The project is scheduled to be completed in late spring 2019.

The clinic will be open with regular hours during construction.
