Cities host immigrant information sessions

GREENFIELD — A pair of immigrant information sessions are scheduled for Saturday in Greenfield and King City with officers from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services who will be available to answer general immigration questions from the community.

The cities partnered with the agency to present two free community outreach events Sept. 9, the first of which takes place at 10 a.m. at Greenfield City Hall, 599 El Camino Real in Greenfield. The second program begins at 2 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 504 N. Third St. in King City.

The two-hour information sessions will cover the naturalization process and requirements of becoming a U.S. citizen, the citizenship test and ways to avoid falling victim to immigration scams. Officers will also conduct a demonstration version of the citizenship interview.

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, these visits are part of a larger initiative to help immigrants better understand the many services available. Officers will be able to answer questions from those attending the sessions in both English and Spanish.

“The program is part of the City’s overall efforts to make available accurate information on this important subject in order to address the needs of all its residents,” said Steve Adams, city manager for King City.

The City of King recently launched a new pilot program for residents to receive assistance regarding immigration and citizenship issues through the Catholic Charities Diocese of Monterey.

The free program, which began June 30 and runs every Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for six months, offers support on an individual or group basis at the local Baptist Church.

For more information about the Sept. 9 information sessions, contact Silvia Camacho at 831-674-5111 ext. 2265 in Greenfield or King City Hall at 831-385-3281. For case-specific questions, call the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services at 800-375-5283.
