Barsenas to lead Bruins

GREENFIELD — Greenfield High School 2004 graduate Adam Barsenas has just completed his first month as the new head football coach for the Bruins. The 32-year-old Barsenas wants to revive the football program as they enter the newly formed Pacific Coast Athletic League after the disbandment of the Mission Trail Athletic League.

“I want to see what I can do to put new energy into the program,” said Barsenas. “My goal is to get our team back to the days when we were getting into the playoffs or fighting for a playoff spot. We have a chance to be successful in the new league and with some good planning we will have the opportunity to grow into a contending team. I want us to be a good running team and run more of a hybrid type of offense.”

Barsenas played football at Greenfield for coaches Ron Militano, Matt Gildersleeve, and Tito Sabado in the JV level. Barsenas was also player on the Bruin basketball teams. After attending school at Fresno State, Barsenas returned to Greenfield and helped coach Pop Warner football for a few years with Eddie Galvez and the Greenfield Raiders where he worked as a quarterback and running back coach.

Barsenas coached Pop Warner for a few years then moved up to the high school to assist in the junior varsity football program. Barsenas served as a coordinator or special teams coach for four years at the JV level and has been a defensive coordinator for the last three years in the varsity level under head coach Ryan Bravo.

Barsenas has been a boys basketball coach at Greenfield High serving as head JV coach, varsity assistant, and as head coach last season. Barsenas began coaching basketball a few years ago at Gonzales High.

“My wife Elizabeth was the head girls basketball coach at Gonzales and I helped her as an assistant,” said Barsenas. “When she came over to coach at Greenfield I continued to help her in the JV level and then I moved over to coach the boys JV team. I will continue to help with varsity basketball team but just as an assistant.”

Barsenas already has his coaching staff set for the football season and has picked up many Greenfield alumni to help with the varsity and junior varsity programs.

Assisting Barsenas and continuing to serve as offensive coordinators are Marc Villanueva and his father Marc Villanueva Sr. Bert Howard will continue as a line coach for the Bruin varsity. Rudy Amezcua, a Greenfield alumni and recent graduate of Iowa, Wesleyan University, will also be part of the varsity coaching staff, and Javier Zavala will be working with receivers and defensive backs.

Adrian Trujillo has been selected at the junior varsity head coach and he will be assisted by Daniel Mireles, Roger Contreras and John Untalon.
