Annual fire hydrant flushing to begin Nov. 6

GREENFIELD — Greenfield Public Works Department will begin the annual fire hydrant flushing program Monday, Nov. 6, which may cause temporary inconveniences for residents over the next month.

Hydrant flushing will take place Monday through Thursday, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and could take up to three weeks to complete. The program’s primary purpose is to verify the proper operation of the city’s fire hydrants through periodic inspections, flow testing and preventative maintenance.

“The flushing program is necessary to maintain a good water supply for both firefighting and domestic purposes,” according to Public Works.

During the hydrant flushing, residents may experience a reduction in water pressure and aesthetic issues, such as discoloration of the drinking water.

Officials said discolored water poses no threat to the public’s health, but it will stain laundry and, if consumed, may have an unpleasant taste.

Any residents who continue to notice discolored water coming from their fixture should flush the cold water side for about five minutes.

Contact Public Works at 831-674-2635 with any questions.
