Elias De Leon Jr

Elias De Leon Jr, 79, of Greenfield, passed away surrounded by family, Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Watsonville Nursing Center.

Elias was born April 2, 1939 in Linares, Nuevo Leon, Mexico and had been a long time resident of Greenfield. He graduated from King City High School in 1959 and received an Associates Degree from Hartnell Community College. He served in the US Marine Corps from 1960 to 1964. He was employed for Wells Fargo Bank and the Greenfield Police Department and then served 29 years with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department, retiring as Sergeant in 1996.

Elias was a member of the Greenfield City Council from 1976 to 1986, was an appointed mayor in 1982 and became the first directly elected mayor of Greenfield, chosen by the voters in 1986. He was the first Hispanic / Latino mayor of the city of Greenfield. He was a member of the American Legion Post 635 Greenfield, VFW, Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and enjoyed participating in the church Grupo de Oracion. Elias loved playing music, singing, karaoke, and casinos.

He is survived by his wife, Isilda Amaral; daughter, Elisia De Leon; son, Elias A. (Lupe Ortiz) De Leon III; grandchildren, Miles, Desmond, Astasia, Aria, Ryan; siblings, George (Lydia) De Leon, Jose Carlos (Connie Maria Ortiz) De Leon, Linda De Leon; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Ermelinda in 2013; parents, Elias & Maria; siblings, Manuel, Francisco, Liborio, Edmundo, and Esther.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 20, 2018 from 4 to 7 pm at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Greenfield; followed with rosary at 7 pm. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 10 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Greenfield; followed with burial at The Greenfield Cemetery.
