OPINION: Community Choice Program decision

New news: The decision was made by the City of King City Council with a 3-2 vote to pursue a city-based Community Choice Energy Program. It was adopted and many attending had wanted the new energy-saving program as a way to a cleaner environment. Mayor LeBarre met with Bishop Garcia to talk about the city’s efforts to end youth violence and ways to strengthen the community with renewable energy.

New news: City Council honored the Monterey County teacher of the year. History teacher John Miller of Chalone Peaks Middle School came to change the world by mentoring and inspiring future generations. He is a contributor of several books and author of “Minecraft for Kids,” which may be purchased at Sol Treasures. At the same meeting, Sol Treasures was honored and an opportunity to watch what has been accomplished in fewer than 10 years was shown on screen presented by Betsy Ottmann, Sonia Chapa and Barbara Pekema.

Old news: Also at the same council meeting that went until after 10 p.m., there were so many important items that it was difficult when I left. Like in the past, restrictions on hotel, motel and long-term stays were addressed, which might be seen as too little too late. Now, the council chamber room was full of folks wanting to know what is being done about it. It would appear nothing.

New news: Business owners are unhappy with how it’s been handled. Caught in the middle are these young ag workers, and we need them to stay; however, not all understand why. When I went to talk with my district representative, Councilman Carlos Deleon, he promised the problem should be solved soon. The staff will consider alternatives and directions or options, so I have been told.

New news: On April 1 was the kickoff of Relay for Life with a dinner held at Lawrence’ to learn who is honoree of the year and cancer survivors. The turnout was great, and Rhett Falsey and Yolanda Maldonado were nominated. The events end Aug. 5-6 in the park. The King City Golf Club had its Chicken Barbecue the same day as their ladies’ bake sale too. A Republican Women Federated Scholarship Fundraiser, more than just a salad bar luncheon, is planned April 21. Easter is not far behind, nor is the fair. If looking for a part-time job, apply at Salinas Valley Fair, now advertised in our local newspaper.

New news: To look to Monday and meeting Sheriff Steve Bernal’s son Jace Bernal, who is to be sworn in as our King City Police Officer at the King City Police Department. Going back to their family history in law enforcement is long and with his grandfather Dick Crocker. Their story about their history has to be told in length.
