KING CITY — The King City Mustangs are just two games out of first in the Mission Trail Athletic League and trail the second place Soledad Aztecs by just one game. King City kept pace with the league leaders with a 12-0 and 8-2 win over the Anzar Hawks in games played last week in San Juan Bautista and King City.
“We hit the ball hard and well against Anzar,” said King City head coach Lorenzo Espino. “Clay Barbree pitched a no-hitter and hit the ball well in the first game and Brian Lopez started the game and won the decision in the second game with help from John Serrano who came in and closed the game out.”
Barbree was a force on the mound with 12 strikeouts and matched his pitching performance with three hits and four runs batted in. Cedrick Perez was credited with the RBI’s and Tommy Stephens had three hits and three RBI’s.
In the second game of the series in King City Stephens and Barbree each had three hits and two RBI’s apiece. Ian Espino had two basehits and David Lopez added a single.
King City travels to Carmel today to play the fourth place Carmel Padres and will host the Padres on Friday in King City. King City is 11-3 in the MTAL and 16-7 overall. Carmel is one game behind the Mustangs at 10-4 and is the only MTAL team to beat Pacific Grove in league this season.
