Lady Bruins tie with Puma

SOUTH COUNTY — In a battle for first place in the Mission Trail Athletic League, the Greenfield Lady Bruin soccer gained half a game on front running Pacific Collegiate as the teams finished in a 1-1 tie in last Thursday’s game in Greenfield.

Dulce Avalos broke a 0-0 tie at the 18th minute of the second half with a goal but the Puma’s Gina Gwiazda scored in the closing minutes as the teams had to settle for the tie. Lucero Martinez assisted on the Avalos goal.

“That team (Pacific Collegiate), beat us last year in the post playoff game,” said Greenfield head coach Eliseo Ayala. “We knew they were going to attack hard but our defense was able to hold them with only one goal.”

In their first game of the week Greenfield downed the Santa Catalina Cougars by a 6-2 score. Katie Martinez scored two goals and had an assist. Other Bruin scorers were Julia Carrasco, Abigail Rebolledo, Iris Alcantar, and Dulce Avalos. Carrasco and Avalos were credited with assists.

Greenfield is now 5-1-1 in league and 9-2-1 overall and hosted King City on Monday, Soledad tonight, and finishing the week in Pebble Beach on Friday against the Stevenson Pirates.

The defending MTAL champion Soledad Aztecs won their second league game, beating Stevenson by a 4-0 score. Goal scorers were Viviana Fausto, Xitclalli Ramirez, Monique Ascencio, and Michaela Raimrez. Soledad lost 3-1 at home to Pacific Grove in their second game of the week. The Aztecs (2-9-1, 2-4-1), hosted Pacific Collegiate on Monday, travels today to Greenfield, and will host the Carmel Padres on Friday.

The Soledad JV team defeated the Pacific Grove Breakers by a 4-2 score. Goal scorers for Soledad were Getsemani Puga (two goals), Wendy Ceja (one goal), and Isabel Moreno (one goal).

The King City Lady Mustangs (4-3, 5-7-1), began the week with a 3-0 home loss to Pacific Collegiate and defeated the Carmel Padres by a 2-1 score. Jatziri Gaxiola and Yesenia Silva scored the goals in the Carmel game. King City will host Stevenson tonight.

Gonzales High is in first place in the Coastal League with a 4-1-1 record after a 3-1 victory over York in Gonzales and a 0-0 tie against the Marina Mariners. Jazmine Hernandez had a goal and an assist in the win over the Mariners while Elida Cholula and Susan Tejeda score single goals. The Spartans play at home today against Ceiba College Prep and play in Monterey against Trinity Christian on Friday.

  

BOYS

The Soledad Aztec boys team began the week at 6-0 in league and 11-1-1 overall but began the week against Gonzales on road on Monday. Soledad beat the Spartans 3-1 at the start of league in Soledad. In their only game last week the Aztecs shutout Stevenson by a 5-0 score. Goals were scored by Javier Lugo (two) and single scores by Alexis Sanchez, Marco Ceja, and Alexis Ortiz. Josue Rios earned an assist on a goal. Following the Gonzales game the Aztecs host Greenfield tonight and play the Carmel Padres on Friday.

Gonzales had a successful week with a 3-0 win over Greenfield and a 2-0 win over the King City Mustangs. Rodrigo Manzo, Francisco Leon, and Nazareth Amador scored the goal against Greenfield and Enrique Melena and Leon scored goals against King City. Gonzales is 8-3 overall and 5-1 in league and will host Carmel tonight at Dick Force Stadium.

Greenfield started the week with a 9-0 victory over the Marina Mariners in Seaside. Goal scorers were Daniel Pompa, Ivan Lucio (2), Erik Montoya, Henry Flores (2), Julian Arias, Carlos Martinez, and Gerardo Gomez. Credited with assists were Pompa, Lucio, Martinez, Gomez, Mauricio Arias, Jose Perez, and Sergio Carrasco. Eduardo Ramirez earned the win at goalie for Greenfield. The Bruins are 4-6-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the MTAL with games this week at King City on Monday, a game today at Soledad, and a game on Friday with Stevenson at the Greenfield stadium.
