Lady Bruins battle Stevenson

GREENFIELD — The defending Mission Trail Athletic League champion Robert Louis Stevenson Pirates received all they could handle on Friday from the host Greenfield High Lady Bruin basketball team. Greenfield had the lead at halftime and was tied at 53-53 in the closing minutes before falling to the Pirates, 60-55.

The Lady Bruins kept the game close throughout and took the halftime lead at 27-26 behind 10 points by guard Alize Ortiz, including two 3-point baskets. Stevenson kept the game close with the shooting of guard Ambreece Gaskins with her outside shooting and drives to the basket.

Greenfield had a scare in the second half when post player Maria Hernandez went down hard with a slight ankle injury but was able to return in the final minutes. Hernandez would finish the game with 10 points. Bruin guard Arely Guijarro did a good job of running the offense led Greenfield in scoring with 12 points, including two field goals and a 3-point basket in the fourth quarter.

With the score tied at 53-53 and time running down the Pirates benefitted from some missed free-throws by Greenfield and a turnover.

Monica Gayton contributed with seven points for Greenfield, including a fourth quarter 3-point basket and Yazmin Solis added six points. Gaskins led all scorers with 32 points, including six 3-point baskets and teammate Antonia Malate joined her in double figures with 11 points.

In the JV game the Lady Bruins beat Stevenson, 37-31 as Ariel Carrillo scored eight points for the home team.

At home last week against Santa Catalina, the Lady Bruins ran off to a 35-12 halftime lead and never let up in a 52-23 victory. Maria Hernandez led Greenfield in scoring and rebounding with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Arely Guijarro finished the game with 12 points.

Greenfield (2-3 in the MTAL, and 8-7 overall), played at King City last night and will complete the week tomorrow by hosting the Carmel Padres.
