‘Hit Squad’ football team wins tournament

GREENFIELD — Four youth football players from Greenfield have had plenty of success this spring as members of the Monterey County Hit Squad Football Team. The Hit Squad won a 9 and under age group tournament two weeks ago in Tempe, Ariz., and will play in the Gridiron National Championship Tournament in Temecula starting on Friday.

Greenfield residents Steven Rojas, Nathan Rojas, Angel Hernandez and Jacob Hernandez joined the Hit Squad, a member of the Bay Area Spring Football League and are playing on a team that includes players from Monterey County and San Jose. Steven Rojas plays right tackle, Nathan Rojas plays right guard, Angel Hernandez plays cornerback, Nathan Hernandez plays running back, and Jacob Hernandez plays guard.

At the National Youth Football Tournament in Tempe the Hit Squad beat a team from Arizona and a team from South Colorado to reach the tournament championship game. In the finals the Hit Squad defeated the Jr. Broncos from Denver, Colorado by a 20-19 score to win the tournament championship.

On Friday at Temecula, the Hit Squad will play one or more games, play a game on Saturday, and will work to have a winning record to play for the championship on Sunday. The Gridiron National Championship Tournament will be the last tournament of the year for the Hit Squad who are coached by George Saunders of Salinas.

The Gridiron National Championship Tournament will feature 130 teams in various divisions traveling to Temecula from cities in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Hawaii and Samoa.
