Greenfield optimistic despite setbacks

GREENFIELD — Three losses at the North Salinas Bob Steinbach Classic did not dampen the optimism of Greenfield’s first-year head coach Adam Barsenas. The Bruins fell to 1-7 with one non-league game remaining to play.

“We are fairly young and we know that we will be going through some ups and downs,” said Coach Barsenas. “Pre-season hasn’t been what we had hoped for as far as wins and losses go, but we have improved with every game. Our guys our hungry and I believe we will hit the season ready to roll and compete at a high level.”

In the first game at North Salinas the Bruins trailed by five against the host Vikings at 19-14 but fell behind after being outscored 20-10 in the second quarter. North Salinas built the lead to 60-38 at the end third quarter and won the game, 73-51.

Angel Villagomez led Greenfield in scoring with 15 points and added five rebounds and made four steals. Angel Espinosa scored 10 point and had four rebounds, Agustin Pantoja scored seven points with seven rebounds, and Oscar Villagomez scored six points and finished with four assists.

In the second game of the tournament for the Bruins the King City Mustangs outscored Greenfield in three of the four quarters to win by a 64-40 score. King City’s Andy Barrios led all scorers with 21 points. Oscar Villagomez scored 13 points for Greenfield and added four rebounds, Angel Villagomez scored 11 points with one 3-point basket and six rebounds, and Eduardo Villagomez contributed with five points and one 3-point basket.

Last Friday the Bruins concluded the tournament with 74-41 setback against Redwood Christian of San Lorenzo. Redwood Christian used a 29-7 opening first quarter to pull away from Greenfield.

Angel Villagomez had a good game with 13 points, three rebounds, and made two steals.

Oscar Villagomez scored 11 points, with two rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Angel Espinosa just missed double figures in scoring with nine points and had two 3-point baskets with three rebounds. Agustin Pantoja scored seven points and had three rebounds.

Greenfield completes the non-league schedule tonight in San Juan Bautista against the Anzar Hawks and will open the Mission Trail Athletic League at Soledad High.
