Greenfield man sentenced to prison for strangling his child, beating ex-wife with ladder

GREENFIELD — Kirk Salisbury, 52, of Greenfield was sentenced Oct. 19 to four years in prison after entering pleas of no contest to felony child abuse and felony domestic violence.

On Sept. 9, at about 4:04 p.m., Salisbury was asleep on the floor in his 12-year-old daughter’s bedroom. He became enraged when she entered the room and inadvertently woke him up. Salisbury attempted to hit the child with a broomstick, but was unable to make contact when she hid behind her bunk bed ladder. He then wrapped both hands around his daughter’s neck and squeezed for approximately 20 seconds.

Her mother, Salisbury’s ex-wife, ran into the room and began hitting Salisbury to pull him off of the child. Salisbury then attacked Jane Doe, causing her to fall to the floor. He then began kicking her in the chest and beating her with the bunk bed ladder. The assault continued in front of the child until another family member entered the room and removed Salisbury.

Monterey County Superior Court Judge Robert A. Burlison sentenced Salisbury to four years in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Judge Burlison also issued a criminal protective order for Jane Doe and the child, which prevents Salisbury from contacting them for a period of 10 years.

This case was investigated by Greenfield Police Officer Eric Rodriguez.
