Greenfield leads MTAL soccer

SOUTH COUNTY — Two wins last week earned the Greenfield High girls soccer team the first place spot in the Mission Trial Athletic League with a 3-0 record.

The Bruins shutout host Soledad 2-0 and edged the Robert Louis Stevenson Pirates 3-2 to improve to 7-1 overall.

Katie Martinez scored one goal and assisted on a goal by Lucero Martinez in the win over the defending MTAL champion Aztecs. Bruin goalie Delilah Rocha earned her first shutout win of the season.

In the home win over the Pirates Julia Carrasco assisted on two goals by Martinez and another by Tracy Gonzales.

The game was tied at 1-1 at the half with the Bruins scoring the game-winner in the second half.

Greenfield played yesterday at Carmel (2-1 in league) finishes the week tomorrow at home against the 1-2 Pacific Grove Breakers. Soledad suffered back-to-back shutouts, losing 2-0 last Thursday to Carmel. The Lady Aztecs are 0-2-1 in league and 0-7-1 overall. Soledad host Santa Catalina yesterday and play at King City tomorrow.

The Greenfield JV girls team beat Soledad 3-0 with goals by Bianca Munoz, Emelin Chavez, and Karla Ruiz. Veronica Rodriguez earned an assist. Greenfield edged Stevenson 2-1 with goal by Rodriguez on a rebound and Carla Sanchez scored a goal.

The Lady Mustangs are 2-1 in the MTAL and 3-5-1 overall beating Stevenson 4-0 and Santa Catalina 8-0 last week. Jatziri Gaxiola scored two goals in the Stevenson game and Sarahi Pineda and Andrea Rodriguez scored single goals. At home with Santa Catalina Gaxiola scored six goals against the Cougars. Rodriguez added a goal and Esmeralda Alvarez score a goal. King City played at Pacific Grove yesterday afternoon and will host Soledad tomorrow.

In the Coastal Athletic League the Gonzales girls team is 2-0 and in first place, opening league with a 2-1 win over Ceiba College Prep and shutting out Trinity Christian last Friday night by a 3-0 tally. Jazmine Hernandez scored a first half goal in the Cieba College Prep game, and scored the game-winner in the second half. Susan Tejeda was credited with assists on the goals.

At Friday’s win over Trinity Christian Susana Tejada scored a goal off an assist by Ashley Ochoa in the first half and Jazmine Hernandez scored a first-half goal with an assist by Selene Virgen. Daniela Rosas completed the scoring with a second half goal and assist by Tejeda.

Gonzales continued league play yesterday at Oakwood School and will host the Anzar Hawks tomorrow afternoon at Dick Force Stadium.

  

BOYS

In MTAL boys games last week, the Soledad High Aztecs improved to 3-0 with 4-2 win at Greenfield and a 3-1 win over the visiting Carmel Padres. Carlos Esqueda scored two goals in the Greenfield game and Ruben Esqueda and Anthony Garcia score single goals. Alexis Sanchez, Javier Lugo, and Fabian Santano were credited with assists for the Aztecs. Ivan Lucio scored two goals for Greenfield in the setback.

Against Carmel Carlos Esqueda scored two goals and Sanchez scored one goal. Alexis Ortiz had two assists and Chuy Rodriguez had one assist in the victory over the Padres. Soledad played at Marina yesterday and have a showdown with King City tomorrow at home. The Soledad JV team beat Carmel by a 1-0 score.

Lucio scored two goals and Gerardo Gomez had two goals in the win over Greenfield Bruins 6-0 win over Stevenson. Henry Flores had one goal and three assists, Daniel Pompa scored one goal and had an assist, and Julian Arias earned an assist. The Bruins are 1-2 in the MTAL standings and played yesterday at Carmel and travel to the Peninsula again tomorrow for a game with Marina.

King City had just one game last week, shutting out the Marina Mariners by a 4-0 score. Max Pallas, Eduardo Ramirez, Marco Cuellar, and Giovanni Jimenez scored goals for the 2-0 Mustangs.

Gonzales recovered from the loss to Soledad last week by earning a 4-0 shutout win over Carmel. Christian Ayala scored two goals and Erik Mata and Javier Martinez scored single goals. The 1-1 Spartans played at Stevenson yesterday and will host Marina tomorrow afternoon.
