GREENFIELD — For a team that entered their game with Greenfield having lost four of its last five contests, the Santa Cruz Cardinals were impressive in a 48-22 win over the Bruins last Friday night. Greenfield allowed two touchdowns by five different Cardinals and two by quarterback Abram Soriano in the Mission Trail Athletic League loss.
“We are just not playing good football and have not the last few weeks,” said Bruin head coach Ryan Bravo. “The defense is on the field way too much and it is hard playing catch up when you fall behind. We commit too many mistakes and penalties when on offense that stalled our drives and scoring opportunities. In order to have a chance to win, these flaws must be eliminated.”
Soriano led Santa Cruz on the field and with the two scores. Adding solo touchdowns for the Cardinals were Johnny Soto, Nathaniel Loza, Alonzo Rodriguez, Adrian Flores, and Taj Carpenter.
The Bruins score their first touchdown in the first quarter with an eight-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Andy Hernandez to Jose Uribe. Greenfield added a 10-yard touchdown pass from Hernandez to Rodrigo Frias, and completed its scoring with a nine-yard touchdown run by Hernandez. The quarterback also scored on a pair of two-point conversions.
Greenfield had 152 rushing yards with Hernandez running for 128 of those yards on 14 carries. Hernandez had an eight of 20 passing efficiency for 151 yards. Bryan Ceballos caught two passes for 77 yards and Frias had four catches for 62 yards and scored one touchdown. Uribe had one catch and one touchdown.
Greenfield will travel to the Monterey Peninsula to play the Marina Mariners at Monterey Peninsula College. As Marina does not field a junior varsity program, the varsity contest is scheduled to kick off at 6 pm.
In last Friday’s junior varsity contest the Bruins were defeated 36-20 by the Cardinals.
“It was a close game, they (Cardinals) were leading 16-14 at the half,” said Greenfield head coach Bill Riddell. “Daniel Morales threw two touchdowns and ran for another. Jose Hernandez caught two touchdown passes. Sebastian Meza and Jesse Martinez played well on defense.”
