GREENFIELD — The Greenfield City Council on March 14 unanimously approved a public works contract to Thayer Construction for the construction of the Patriot Park Improvement Project.
The City of Greenfield is part of a Community Development Block Grant Program along with Salinas, Gonzales, Monterey County and Sand City.
According to Community Service Director Mic Steinmann, the city had previously allocated $248,600 for the Patriot Park Project Improvements.
“One of the projects council supported was improvements to Patriot Park,” Steinmann said. “Which include renovating the restrooms there, connecting the restrooms to the city sewer system and also constructing a food concession stand.”
Thayer Construction bid $286,226.89 for the restroom improvements, a connection to the sewer system and the new food concession stand.
The city council was asked to approve an additional 10 percent of the total contract amount of $28,000 as a construction contingency amount. The total cost for the Patriot Park Improvements is $356,500. The remaining balance of approximately 107,900 is going to be taken from the Sewer Fund.
According to Steinmann, construction should begin within 30 days.
Council Member Lance Walker said the project needed to begin quickly because Little League had already started.
“My very first meeting in 2012, Mrs. (Beatriz) Diaz came up to the podium and her public comment was about the bathroom,” Walker said. “It’s taken four or over four years to get this done, so I think we need to move on this and we need to move on it fast to accommodate the Little League and everybody that goes out there.”
Diaz asked about the restroom stall situation and currently the improvements would only include two stalls with the possibility of more when funds become available.
