Cougars beat Greenfield, 2-1

HALF MOON BAY — The Greenfield Bruin baseball team lost 2-1 in extra innings to the host Half Moon Bay Cougars on Saturday in a non-league game. The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the third inning but game up the tying run in the fifth inning and the winning run in the eighth.

Daniel Mendoza led the Greenfield hitters with two singles. Tony Castro, JJ Rodriguez, and Hernan Perea contributed with hits. Ubaldo Trujillo allowed two runs in two innings and Oscar Hernandez pitched three innings and allowed four hits and one run. Tony Castro pitched two innings and allowed one run and two hits.

Greenfield’s record is 13-6 overall and 10-2 in the Mission Trail Athletic League.

The Bruins resumed league play yesterday by hosting the Soledad High Aztecs (17-3 overall, 10-2 in league). On Friday the teams will face off in Soledad.

“Timely hitting and consistent defense will ensure victory for either team,” said Bruin head coach Ray Green. “It’s just a matter of who plays better that day. I’m excited to be where we are but this league and playoffs are still up in the air. It could boil down to the final game of the season that determines the overall outcome of this tightly run race this season.”
