Community meets new Science Workshop employee

GREENFIELD — Local youth and their families recently got to meet Greenfield Community Science Workshop’s new employee and author Curt Gabrielson to hear about his latest book, “More Tinkering: Kids in the Tropics Learn by Making Stuff,” and partake in hands-on science activities at the Greenfield Library.

Gabrielson, who ran the Watsonville Science Workshop for more than 11 years, is now working with Coordinator Jose Sanchez at the Greenfield location.

In addition to being an author with more than five published books, Gabrielson recently lived with his family for several years in Timor-Leste, a small, newly independent nation near Indonesia and Australia. There, he worked with the Ministry of Education to start a new physics department at the national university, create locally relevant curricula for primary school through high school and train teachers on how to do hands-on activities with simple materials in their classrooms.

At the April 6 community event, Gabrielson showed some of the teaching activities from his book.

He was accompanied by Sanchez and other Science Workshop staff who presented various hands-on activities for participants to make and take home.
