GREENFIELD — Utilizing a double wing formation the Watsonville High Wildcatz improved to 3-0 in the pre-season with a 35-14 win over the Greenfield Bruins (1-1) on Friday in Greenfield. Watsonville powered over the Bruins in the first quarter, taking a commanding 21-0 lead.
“We just ran into a buzz saw,” said Greenfield head coach Ryan Bravo. “They (Wildcatz), are a good team and are 3-0 now. We just have to learn and grow from it and focus on playing another great team in Soledad. We have the utmost respect for Coach Berlanga and his program. With them coming into town this week we expect a great Friday Night Lights atmosphere. They are coached extremely well and play hard. It is going to be a great challenge for us.”
Watsonville lined up in the double wing and used the tight splits and a pair of strong running backs in Evan Delozier and Johnny Bravo to manhandle the Bruins. Touchdown of 54-yards and three-yards gave Watsonville a 14-0 lead. Bravo added a six-yard score to give the visitors a 21-0 advantage. Bravo ended the half with a 10-yard touchdown run that gave the Wildcatz a 28-0 lead.
In the third quarter Watsonville completed their scoring with a touchdown by Juan Valenzuela that built the lead to 35-14. Greenfield scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter behind the running of quarterback Andy Hernandez. On the first touchdown Hernandez ran the ball in from one-yard and Isaac Pajas scored on a two-point conversion. Hernandez completed the Bruin scoring with a 54-yard touchdown run. Greenfield failed on two-point conversion attempt to end the game 35-14.
Hernandez led the Bruins in rushing with 125 yards on 12 carries and threw for 104 yards on a 14 of 19 passing effort. Pajas run for 78 yards on 16 carries and Calvin Lopez contributed with eight yards on two carries. Cayden Patterson led the Bruin receivers with four receptions for 45 yards and Rodrigo Frias had five receptions for 26 yards. Brayan Ceballos caught one pass for 18 yards and Pajas had one reception for 15 yards.
The Bruin JV football team played another competitive game, falling 20-16 against the Wildcatz. Just like last week the Bruins had the ball in the final seconds but were no able to pull out the win.
“It was a really good game that went back-and-forth,” said Greenfield head JV coach Bill Riddell. “We just have to keep working hard because we have a tough game coming up with Soledad and then we start league the following week. It is important to be ready to compete and get better. Against Watsonville we just ran out of time and weren’t able to get another score. Jess Martinez played well for us on offense and did our corners Daniel Morales and Sebastian Meza. Brian Pina also did well on the defensive line.”
Martinez scored the first Greenfield points on a 15-yard sweep and JD Lopez scored on three-yard run.
