Bruins, Mustangs split wins

KING CITY — Home was a tough place to play for the Greenfield Bruins and King City Mustang baseball teams in their two-game Mission Trail Athletic League series. The Bruins won 5-4 at King City in the first game of the series and the Mustangs responded with a 8-1 win in Greenfield.

In the first game Ubaldo Trujillo and Jamie Rodriguez provided three hits apiece, Greenfield’s Antonio Castro had just enough help to earn the pitching win. JJ Rodriguez added two hits and three runs batted in Castro helped his own cause with two hits.

David Ortiz led King City with two hits and Clay Barbree had one hit and one RBI. Brian Lopez went seven innings for the Mustangs but had a rough start giving up three runs in the first inning. King City was able to come back and tie the game.

“It was a really well played baseball game with two good baseball teams going at it,” said King City head coach Lorenzo Espino. “It was fun to see both South County teams playing so well.”

The Bruins outhit the Mustangs 13-4, and Castro gave up just three hits in the game.

In the second game at Greenfield Barbree started the game at pitcher at earned the win for the Mustangs with a two-hitter. Barbree provided some offensive punch with two hits and three RBI’s. Contributing for King City with two hits apiece were Tommy Stephens, Jose Arreola, and David Ortiz.

Greenfield was led in hitting by Castro and Trujillo with basehits. Oscar Hernandez started the game for the Bruins and struckout five batters in four innings of play. Trujillo pitched the final three innings for Greenfield.

King City is now 11-6 overall and 8-3 in the MTAL. Greenfield is 13-6 overall and 10-2 in league. The Mustangs play Saturday at North Monterey County. The Bruins play a non-league game on Saturday at Half Moon Bay.
