Bruins hold off Pirates, 8-6

GREENFIELD — A sixth inning rally by the Greenfield Bruin baseball team helped the host team defeated the Robert Louis Stevenson Pirates 8-6 on Friday at Hartnell College in Salinas.

The win helped Greenfield to improve to 2-4 in the Mission Trail Athletic League and 4-5 overall.

“We had to play a doubleheader with Stevenson and the game was moved to Hartnell College,” said Greenfield head coach Ray Green. “It was nice to be able to play on the Panthers field. The games were moved to Hartnell as we had to play on a neutral site. Stevenson tied the game in the sixth inning but we were able to end their comeback by taking advantage of defensive mistakes by them in the bottom of the sixth. It was good to get the league win.”

A committee of six pitchers shared the mound for Greenfield with A Zavala winning the game with 2.1 innings of work. The Bruins allowed 12 hits and walked 11 Pirate batters while striking out three.

Andy Espinoza led the Greenfield hitters with three base hits. Andrew Trujillo had two hits, including a double with two runs batted in, and Jaime Soto had two hits and two RBI’s. Oscar Villagomez and Soto had stolen bases.

In the first game of the doubleheader with Stevenson, the Pirates defeated Greenfield, 11-2. The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but were outscored 10-1 the rest of the way. Villagomez, Espinoza, and Izaiah Mora had basehits, and Espinoza and Cristobal Vega hit doubles. Trujillo took the pitching loss.

Yesterday the Bruins began a two-game home series with the Trinity Christian Warriors. The Bruins will host the Warriors tomorrow at 4 p.m.
