Bruins break losing streak at Soquel

GREENFIELD — Greenfield Bruins recovered from giving up a 13-point lead to snap a four-game losing streak with a last second 50-48 victory at Soquel High on Friday night. Greenfield used a final drive to set up the 20-yard game winning field goal by William Enriquez then held on as the host Knights ran one final play with .8 seconds remaining.

“Our goal when we fell behind at forty-eight to forty-seven was to move the ball and run all the time we could off the game clock,” said Greenfield head coach Ryan Bravo. “With 18 seconds to play we took one last shot at the end zone and when we didn’t get we spiked the ball to set up the field goal try by William (Enriquez) with 3.3 seconds to play. We then used an onside kick and even though we didn’t recover the football we had Soquel out of field goal range and time ran out on them the next play.  It was exciting to walk off the field on walk-off winning field goal. All and all it was a good team by our offense and actually by our whole team. We needed to get the win to have a little momentum going into Friday’s rival game with King City.”

While the teams combined for nearly 100 points the offensive standout was clearly Bruin quarterback Andy Hernandez as led Greenfield with 401 rushing yards on 36 carries and scored a school-record seven touchdowns. Also contributing on the ground for Greenfield was LJ Richardson, who finished the game with 119 yards on 16 carries.

Hernandez demonstrated his running prowess with long touchdown runs of 37, 59, and 45 yards. The signal caller added a 14-yard touchdown run, a three yard touchdown run, and a one-yard run.

Greenfield improved to 2-4 in the MTAL Coastal Division and 3-6 overall. The 50 points scored by the Bruins was a season-high.

In Friday’s JV contest the Knights defeated the Bruins, 34-24. Daniel Morales threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jose Hernandez and scored last in the game on a 28-yard scramble. Ivan Torres added a touchdown on a sweep call. Excelling defensively for Greenfield were Miguel Hernandez, Jesse Martinez, and J.D. Lopez.
