Bruins, Aztec runners place at Hollister

HOLLISTER — The Greenfield High School and Soledad High School cross country teams came home with team awards and medals for their participation at the Third Annual Dry River Run at Hollister. The event was hosted by San Benito High School (Hollister) and was a two mile course. The top 10 placers in each division won medals and the top three teams won plaques.

Greenfield edged Soledad 50-52 in the senior boys race with Bruin Luis Meza winning the race in 10:36. Joining Meza in the top ten from Greenfield were second placer Julian Arias in 10:55 and Daniel Cerna in 11:33. Soledad’s Jesus Rodriguez paced the Aztecs with a seventh place finish in 11:12.

Other finishers from Soledad and Greenfield in the senior race were: 13. Luis Alba (SO) 11:51; 15. Anselmo DeJesus (SO) 12:01; 17.Rafael Barrera (SO) 12:08; 18. Victor Carmona (SO) 12:17; 21. Pedro Zavala (GR) 12:35; 26. Robert Guillen (SO) 13:09; 39. Christopher Guzman (GR) 13:45; 42. Eduardo Garcia (GR) 15:15.

In the sophomore boys race Greenfield placed third behind San Benito and Evergreen Valley. Earning an individual medal was Ricardo Ortiz with a eighth place finish and time of 11:29. Other Bruin sophomore finishers were: 19. Gabriel Martinez 12:30; 20. Adrian Martinez 12:36; 30. Marcos Trujillo 13:24; 32. Andres Dominguez 13:27; 47. Sebastian Raya 16:47; 52. Andrew Dang 19:51.

Greenfield’s Jose Luis DeJesus placed second in the frosh boys race. Other Bruin placers were: 22. Douglas Maldonado 12:42; and 39. Javier Dominguez 13:46.

The Greenfield boys placed fourth in the junior race and were led by overall winner Rigo Garcia, who won the race in 10:36. Earning an individual medal for Greenfield was Mauricio Arias, placing fifth in 11:07. Other Bruin placers were: 20. Juan Bautista 12:03; 32. Kenny Martinez 12:53; 44. Rodrigo Vasquez 13:43; and 62. Abraham Dominguez 14:52.

The Soledad senior girls came home with a team plaque as they placed second behind North Monterey County (27-29). Estefania Montel paced the Aztecs with an eighth place finish in 15:28, followed by teammate Maricela Perez with a ninth place finish in 15:43. Greenfield’s Maria Hernandez placed fifth in 14:16, teammate Zeferina Villa placed 10th in 15:45, and Maria Malagon placed 12th in 15:57. Other Soledad placers were: 19. Jessica Herrera 18:05; 21. Estefania Martinez 18:21; 22. Elise Melchor 18:43; 24. Guadalupe Renteria 18:50.

In the junior girls race Greenfield’s Erika Martinez placed 16th in 14:48 and Monica Reyes placed 18th in 15:09. Gladys Garcia of Greenfield won a medal for placing 10th in the sophomore girls race in 14:49. Other Bruin sophomore runners were: 17. Alexandra Campos 15:53; 18. Wendy Montoya 16:19; 36. Marina Cerna 19:11.

Bernarda DeJesus placed 28th for Greenfield in the frosh girls race in a time of 17:18.

On Saturday, Greenfield, Gonzales, King City and Soledad will compete at the Chieftain Invitational at Toro Regional Park in Salinas.

On Sept. 14 the Mission Trail Athletic League season begins with Soledad and Carmel at Gonzales; Pacific Grove at Greenfield; and Robert Louis Stevenson and Santa Catalina at King City. Races will begin at 4 pm.
