GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Bruin baseball team scored 12 runs with six hits in a home game, and banged out 12 hits in another to win on the road in a two-game series with the Anzar Hawks. The Bruins shutout the Hawks 13-0 in the home game and earned another shutout over Anzar in the away game.
On April 17 in Greenfield Alexis Zavala and Humberto Montoya held the Hawks to just four hits in the 13-0 victory. Zavala allowed one hit and finished with five strikeouts and Montoya contributed by allowing three hits and striking out three.
Izaiah Mora hit two singles and Alexis Zavala, Oscar Villagomez, Andy Espinoza, and Agustin Pantoja added hits of their own. Zavala and Andrew Trujillo hit doubles. The Bruins led by a 2-0 score at the end of the second inning but put the game out of reach with six runs in the third inning, two in the fourth inning, and three runs in the fifth and final inning.
In the second game played Friday at San Juan Bautista the Bruins made the most of their six hits to blank the Hawks by a 12-0 score. The Hawks hurt themselves by committing five errors in the ball game. The game was 1-0 until Greenfield secured the victory with multiple runs in the last three innings. Villagomez and Zavala hit singles and Jaime Soto had a double. Agustin Pantoja earned the win allowing four hits and striking out five batters in the five inning game.
“It was nice to win the Anzar series,” said Greenfield head coach Ray Green. “The next two weeks we are playing some contending teams in Soledad and King City. These teams will capitalize on other team’s mistakes so we have to keep those to a minimum. Both teams are currently playing good ball and are fighting for postseason play. Those will be a good series of baseball.”
