GREENFIELD — With momentum on their side, the Greenfield Bruins went for a win instead of a tie, but a pass for two points in the end zone fell incomplete, resulting in a 22-21 Santa Lucia Divisional loss against Robert Louis Stevenson in Pebble Beach.
The Bruins had earned the shot to win or tie when the Pirates were called for a horse collar penalty on an eight-yard touchdown pass play from Daniel Morales to Jose Hernandez.
“I had a decision to make and choose to go for the win as it seemed like things were going our way,” said Greenfield head coach Adam Barsenas. “Our quarterback Daniel Morales had been throwing the ball well and got us back in the game when we fell behind 15-0. His pass for the win had to be perfect and the throw was really close but just didn’t find the target.”
The Pirates built a 15-0 lead in the first half using the passing and running of quarterback Dylan Santos.
Greenfield cut the lead to 15-8 with a 23-yard touchdown pass play from Morales to Leonardo Ceballos and two-point conversion run by Morales. In the fourth quarter the Bruins got the ball after a strip of the ball that was recovered by Christian Gonzales on the 37-yard line of the Pirates. Morales threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Hernandez and kicked the PAT to tie the game at 15-15. In the final quarter the Pirates scored on an eight-yard touchdown run and a PAT to take a 22-15 advantage.
Morales led the Bruins downfield with time running out and passed for the touchdown to Hernandez with just 10 seconds left to play that set up the final win or tie scenario. Morales finished 11 of 19 passing for 97 yards and threw the two touchdowns to Hernandez.
Jaime Soto led Greenfield with 74 yards on 18 carries and Hernandez had four receptions for 25 yards and the two touchdowns. Raul Martinez led the Bruins with 16 tackles, including one tackle for a loss.
Greenfield is 1-1 in league and 1-4 overall, with a game against Pajaro Valley on Saturday at Cabrillo College in Aptos.
