Athletes place at Kearney Meet

SALINAS — Soledad High varsity thrower Daniel Contawe won the discus and placed second in the shot put at Saturday’s Bill Kearney Track and Field Invitational at Hartnell College in Salinas. Contawe had a winning mark of 148-6 in the discus and finished with a mark of 48-4 in the shot put.

In the frosh-soph boys division, Gonzales High thrower Pablo Villasenor won the shot put with a mark of 47-9 and took second in the discus with a throw of 106-0.

Jackie Ramirez won the frosh-soph girls shot put with a best of 28-9 and took second in the discus with a mark of 75-0.

In the varsity boys division the Paso Robles Bearcats won the varsity division with 60 points followed by Palma with 59 points. Soledad placed ninth with 22 points and Greenfield placed 10th.  The Bearcats won the frosh-soph division with 114 points, outdistancing second place with 50 points. Gonzales High placed tenth with 20 points.

Santa Cruz won the varsity girls division with 86 points, followed by Paso Robles with 58 points. Santa Catalina finished with third with 46 points. In the frosh-soph girls vision Aptos won with 65 points, edging the Bearcats, who finished with 63 points. Gonzales placed eighth with 21 points.

Competed for Soledad at the meet in the varsity boys division were: Miguel Gonzales 18th in the 100 meters, 12.4 and 12th in the shot put at 39-3; Anselmo De Jesus 22nd in the 880, 2:27 and 30th in the 1600 5:19; Jesus Rodriguez 6th in the 1600, 4:33; Emmanuel Ortega 20th in the 100, 12.4 18th in the 200, 24.5, and 4th in the long jump in 18-7; Ulises Camerena 9th in the 110’s, 17.9 and 9th in the 300 hurdles, 43.7.

Scoring in the varsity boys for the Greenfield boys was Luis Meza with a sixth place finish in the 3200 in 10:19. Hector Ramirez competed in the 200 with a 13th place in 23.9 and the 400, 12th place in 54.6. Competing in the frosh-soph boys division for Greenfield were Rodrigo Garcia, third in the 3200 in 10:04 and Kenny Martinez, fourth in the long jump with a mark of 16’11 ¼.

Competing for the Gonzales varsity boys were: Damian Acosta, 12th in the 100 in 12.0 and 10th in the 200, 23.8; Hernan Mojica, 17th in the 100 in 12.3 and 26th in the 200 in 25.4; Ulysses Fierros, 13th in the 400 in 54.8; Jossue Valdez, 19th in the 800 in 2:20, and 26th in the 1600 in 5:10; Faustino Mendez 23rd in the 800, in 2:30 and 33rd in the 1600, 5:26; Mario Martinez 15th in the long jump, 15-4 and 9th in the triple jump in 32-9; Miguel Garcia, 18th in the long jump in 14-9 and 12th in the triple jump in 30-4.

Gonzales boys in the frosh-soph division were: Nathan Perez, 17th in the 100 in 13.0; Andy Perez, 23rd in the 100 in 13.8; Andrew Funk, 23rd in the 1600 in 5:34; Scott Funk, 14th in the 3200 in 11:31; Jacob Amador, 14th in the 65 hurdles in 13.5; Jerome Russell, 15th in the 65 hurdles in 15.0; the 4 x 100 relay team of Amador, Perez, Xavier Jimenez, and Luis Sainz, 5th place in 48.7; Miguel Arreola, 8th in the shot put in 34-2 and 12th in the discus, 85-9; Luis Sainz, 14th in the long jump in 15-4, and 10th in the triple jump, 32-11.

Competing for the Gonzales varsity girls were: Alyssa Martinez, 22nd in the 100, 15.1, 12th in the long jump in 12-10 ½; and 11th in the triple jump 27-4; Bianca Sanchez, 20th in the 100, 14.7, 11th in the long jump, 13-2, and 13th in the triple jump, 26-2; Kathleen Humpries, 29th in the 1600, 6:53. Competing for the Gonzales frosh-soph girls were: Athena Landeros, 100 meters, 14.6 and 400 meters, 70.0; Isabel Mendoza, 16th in the 200 31.2, and 11th in the 400, 70.4; Maria Lopez, 20th in the 100, 15.4; Leslie Hernandez, 9th in the long jump, 12-5; 15th in the 200, 30.9; Jazmin Useda, 12th in the 800, 2:42, 10th in the 1600, 5:54.
