GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Fire Association and Greenfield Police Department took time out July 1 to compete in a friendly game of basketball. The contest started out a little slow but became hotly contested in the second half with the Greenfield Fire Association defeating the Greenfield Police Department by a 42-39 score.
Before and during the game, Greenfield residents and supporters of the Fire Association and Police Department came in to pick up and enjoy tri-tip sandwiches fresh off the grill.
Proceeds from the barbecue will benefit Greenfield scholarships and sponsorships.
Prior to the barbecue and basketball game, members of the Fire Association were sworn in to serve the City of Greenfield from their 380 Oak Ave. address. According to Interim Fire Chief Jeff Terpstra, Greenfield has six paid call firefighters and 15 reserves.
“We are a busy department and had 1,500 calls last year,” Terpstra said. “Now that we have our paid call employees and reserves in place, we can better serve the community. Although we are responsible to Greenfield and the surrounding rural areas, we are ready to assist other local departments.”
