Players, coach honored by CAL

SOUTH COUNTY — Two players and a coach from South County were honored by the Coastal Athletic League for their work on the softball field this spring. Andrea Pantoja of Greenfield was the CAL Player of the Year and Mikayla Davis of King City was the CAL Pitcher of the Year. Lady Bruins head coach Cindy Mercado was chosen as CAL Coach of the Year.

Pantoja, a junior led the tri-county area with eight triples and had eleven multi-hit games. Pantoja finished the year with 36 hits and 37 runs batted in and helped lead the Lady Bruins to the CAL Co-championship with King City.

“Andrea Pantoja played well offensively and defensively,” said Coach Mercado. “At shortstop she had a fielding percentage of .907 with only four errors all season.”

Davis was a solid pitcher for King City and was one of the better hitters on the CAL co-championship team. Davis hit three doubles, two triples, and a homerun during the league season.

Chosen first-team All-CAL from Greenfield along with Pantoja were: Aligha Ramey, Andrea Diaz, Ariel Carrillo, and Miranda Zuniga. King City players joining Davis as first-team All-CAL were: Megan Flores, Buddy Camacho, Julie Arreola, and Caroline Martinez. Gonzales High freshman Sophia Prieto joined the Greenfield and King City players on the first-team.

Rounding out the first-team were: Lily Tran (York), Abby Lindhom (Anzar); and Emily Combs, Sara Hunt, and Hannah Fraser of Trinity. Receiving the Elgie Bellizio Sportmanship Award were Abby Lindholm of Anzar and the Trinity High School team.
