Marina Mariners outplay Greenfield Bruins, 47-16

GREENFIELD — An inspired Marina Mariners football started strong and finished strong in a 47-16 win over the host Greenfield High Bruins last Friday in Greenfield. The Mariners wasted little time getting on the scoreboard and built a 22-0 lead before the Bruins were able to hit paydirt.

“It was more of the same this week,” said Greenfield head coach Ryan Bravo. “Too many mistakes to overcome equal the same result. We put ourselves in a hole early on. We are going to focus on improving and playing better as a team for Senior Night this Friday versus another tough team in Gonzales.”

The Mariner duo of Fermin Gabot and Will Leander scored four touchdowns to build a 28-8 halftime lead. Greenfield reached the end zone in the first half with a touchdown pass from quarterback Andy Hernandez to Brayan Ceballos and a two-point conversion run by Hernandez.

The Mariners scored three more times in the second half including a touchdown by Leander in the third quarter and another touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Bruins competed their scoring with a touchdown. Leander finished the game with four touchdowns. Greenfield scored in the fourth quarter on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Hernandez to tight end Brayan Ceballos and a two-point conversion run by LJ Richardson. The pass by Hernandez tied the school record of touchdown passes of nine completions.

Greenfield fell to 1-3 in the Mission Trail Athletic League and 2-5 overall. The Bruins will conduct a Senior Night presentation before the start of the with Gonzales.
