Sharks wear down Bruins

WATSONVILLE — A potent running game and stingy defense wore down visiting Greenfield in a 42-13 loss to the host St. Francis Sharks on Friday night in Watsonville.

The Sharks scored 36 straight points in the second half after holding just a 6-0 led in the first half. St. Francis had five different players score touchdowns against the Bruins.

“St. Francis did a good job of kicking the ball away from us and we couldn’t stop their drives in the second half,” said Greenfield head coach Ryan Bravo. “We had a couple of chance to score early but our penalties killed us. A pooch kick helped St. Francis score the first second half touchdown and after that the game got away from us really quick. Fatigue played a part in it because our players started to tire out and as coaches we have to do a better job of executing our game plan. They (Sharks), just kept the ball on the ground and didn’t even throw the football.”

Greenfield got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter with a 70-yard touchdown pass play from Andy Hernandez to Rodrigo Frias and another pass play of 80-yard for a score by the duo late in the game.

The Bruins finished with 319 total yards. Hernandez had a five of seven passing performance for 185 yards and Greenfield’s leading rusher with nine attempts for 75 yards. Frias caught the two passes for 150 yards and Andres Espinosa caught two passes for 36 yards.

St. Francis improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Mission Trail Athletic League. Greenfield is 2-3 overall and 1-1 in league.

The Bruins will host Santa Cruz on Friday in the Homecoming Game and St. Francis will host the Harbor Pirates.

In the JV contest St. Francis defeated Greenfield by a 38-8 score. Daniel Morales scored the only Greenfield touchdown.
