Monterey Fisherman’s Wharf Association has partnered with the Greenfield Community Science Workshop to provide funding that will cover the transportation costs for dozens of local families to attend this weekend’s Whalefest on the coast.
Living the suit life
When Laina Babb learned to sew at age 6, she never imagined it would lead her to the opera. She has made her love of sewing into a career, first training and then apprenticing as a tailor. Now, as LA Opera’s head tailor, Babb manages a team of up to six tailors (depending on the show). Together they craft all the men’s suits used in the company’s productions in downtown Los Angeles.
Summit to combat gang violence
Local families, youth and adults are invited to be a part of the annual Gang Prevention Summit on Saturday, Jan. 27, a free event at the Salinas Clubhouse of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Monterey County at 85 Maryal Drive, behind the Salinas Sports Complex. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.
Local groups awarded grants
The Southern Monterey County Foundation (SMCF), an affiliate fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County, has granted $20,000 to nonprofit organizations providing a variety of community-based services aimed at improving the quality of life for South County residents.
In the name of science
Greenfield Community Science Workshop has received a $100,000 grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation that will allow the city program to continue offering free hands-on science activities for local youth and families.
Mission San Antonio hosts Annual Cutting of the Roses
Historic Mission San Antonio de Padua, established in 1771, will host its Annual Cutting of the Roses and Brunch on Sunday, Jan. 28, where those in attendance can take home a treasure from the Mission’s beautiful Padres’ Garden.

The Monterey Museum of Art has announced that multi-media artist Hector Dionicio Mendoza, a former South County resident, will host a one-month artist-in-residency and mixed-media art project.
Chavez announces candidacy for Monterey County supervisor
A new contender has entered the race for the District 3 position on the Monterey County Board of Supervisors. Alejandro Chavez of Soledad announced his candidacy Jan. 4 in front of the Soledad Pinnacles Visitor Center.
Tax prep volunteers needed
Alliance on Aging is looking for a few South County residents to volunteer for the 2018 Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program, which offers no-cost tax preparation services for seniors in Monterey County.
Hartnell offers free college counseling
With the spring semester starting Jan. 16, free academic counseling is available at Hartnell College King City Center, 117 N. Second St., including for high school students.
