Soledad Christmas Celebration seeking contestants for Snow Queen, King

SOLEDAD — The Soledad Christmas Celebration Committee is seeking girls and boys ages 3 to 17 to participate in the Snow Queen and King Competition from Soledad, Greenfield and Gonzales communities.

The categories for the competition include Little Miss Snow Flake for ages 3 to 5 years old, Little Mr. Snow Count ages 3 to 5 years old, Little Miss Snow Angel ages 6 to 9 years old, Little Mr. Snow Duke ages 6 to 9 years old, Little Miss Snow Sparkle ages 10 to 13, Little Mr. Snow Prince ages 10 to 13, Miss Snow Queen ages 14 to 17 and Mr. Snow King ages 14 to 17.

According to the flyer, candidate entry forms are due Monday, Oct. 9, but committee chairwoman Pauline Tomasini said the deadline will be extended.

“The Pageant started 23 years ago and it’s just a nice event for the children,” said Tomasini. “This is something the kids will remember as they grow older.”

The upcoming Downtown Christmas Celebration will be the 32nd year and the pageant started just with the Miss Snow Queen nine years later and the idea was formed by Leah Santibanez. The Snow King and other titles for young boys in Soledad, Gonzales and Greenfield was started approximately three years ago.

“We really need candidates in the 10 to 17 year old age divisions,” Tomasini said.

Tomasini is already receiving calls from school groups who are interested in participating in the Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 2. Those callers are also interested in having food booths at the Christmas celebration.

In the past, the day of the Christmas Parade has begun at 2 p.m. with the Snow Queen and King evening gown review at Liberty Chapel. The festivities move to Front Street, where there is music, food, games, bounce houses and the giant slide. The parade then arrives down on Front Street and the crowning of the Snow Queen and King occurs following that.

Tomasini said the Christmas Celebration started when the City of Soledad received Christmas decorations for the old town area. The Soledad-Mission Chamber of Commerce along with city employees thought the parade would be a perfect way to celebrate.

If interested in participating in the parade or the pageant, contact Tomasini at 678-3379.
