SEASON PREP

SOUTH COUNTY — South County High School football teams in the final weeks of summer conditioning in preparation for the upcoming season. Today in Gonzales the Spartans will host King City, Greenfield, and Soledad in the final seven on seven passing league game of the summer.

“Things are going good and we are working out the kinks and trying to figure out personnel,” said King City head coach Mac Villanueva. “We open with Monte Vista Christian on the road.”

King City and Soledad High will be part of the Mission Trail Athletic League’s Mountain Division that includes Carmel, Pacific Grove, Robert Louis Stevenson, and former Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL) teams San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley. The SCCAL football league disbanded in the spring.

Greenfield and Gonzales High are part of the MTAL’s Coastal Division that includes Marina, and SCCAL schools Harbor, Soquel, Santa Cruz, and St. Francis of Watsonville.

King City will be hosted the South County Jamboree on Aug. 18 at War Memorial Stadium and will continue the Little Big Game tradition against Gonzales by hosting the Spartans on Sept. 15.  The Spartans open the pre-season on Aug. 25 against John C. Fremont High School of Oakland. The game will mark the head coaching debut of Arthur Berlanga.

Soledad High will open the pre-season on Aug. 25 by hosting the Seaside Spartans. This season there will not be a game between twin brothers Frankie Berlanga of Soledad and Arthur Berlanga of Gonzales although the siblings do want to put a matchup on the schedule for next season. Greenfield High opens the pre-season on Sept. 1 in Watsonville against the Pajaro Valley Grizzlies.
