Basketball teams compete in non-league games

SOUTH COUNTY — With the league seasons a month away, local high school basketball teams are traveling near and far to play in non-league contests.

Last week the Soledad High boys and girls teams traveled north for games in the San Jose area, the Gonzales boys played in Watsonville, and the Greenfield boys began the season with games in Paso Robles and at home with Pacific Collegiate. The Gonzales girls and King City girls teams will return to action this week.

On Dec. 4 the Soledad girls (1-3) beat Oakwood at home by a 51-19 score. Scoring in double figures for the Lady Aztecs were Emily Tinajero with 11 points, Xenia Suarez with 10 points, and Oliva Fale with 10 points. On Friday the Lady Aztecs played at Los Altos and were beaten 49-29. Daisy Bugarin was the leading scorer for Soledad with eight points. The Soledad boys (1-2) traveled to Milpitas and suffered a 60-31 loss. Billy Hollman led Soledad with eight points.

The Gonzales High boys (1-5) played at Watsonville on Dec. 5 and lost 67-55 to the Pajaro Valley Grizzlies. Isaiah Banuelos led the Spartans in scoring with17 points, Gonzalo Villagomez score 10 points and had three steals, and Alex Morga scored five points with seven assists.

The Greenfield boys basketball team began the non-league season with a 76-44 loss at Paso Robles and a 59-44 loss to Pacific Collegiate at home on Friday. Against Paso Robles Angel Villagomez led Greenfield with 17 points (two 3-point baskets), and Oscar Villagomez added 10 points with two 3’s. Oscar led Greenfield in scoring with 15 points and three 3-point shot in the home loss. Agustin Pantoja just missed double figures with nine points and Lucio Sanchez scored seven points.
